The Eric Quiring - VE5HG MEMORIAL Saturday Evening 8PM Net

In Memory of Eric Quiring - VE5HG

Memorial Net Agenda - February 7, 2026

Good Evening!

This is VE5SD and my name is Derek and I am located in the Lakeview Area in Saskatoon.

I would like to invite all amateurs listening to participate in this very special edition of the Saturday Night Net and celebrate Eric’s life.

This daily net at 8pm on the 146.640 VE5SK Repeater has been running for over 45 years and has had many phenomenal net controllers over the years.

Eric Quiring - VE5HG has made a significant contribution towards amateur radio here locally, provincially as well on the national level.

Eric for decades was the repeater custodian for VE5SK 146.640 repeater and a number of repeaters in the province.

Eric also was an avid Net Controller on this net and the 75 meter Saskatchewan Phone net.

Eric even sent CW Practice for others to learn.

Eric was a Past President of the Saskatoon Amateur Radio Club and the Saskatchewan Amateur Radio League.

Eric was a recipient of the prestigious Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) AWARD OF HONOUR.

Long before the advent of the Internet, Eric was heavily involved in linking our province’s repeaters together.

Eric was a great friend and mentor.

Forty years ago Eric - VE5HG, Ken - VE5NR, Brian VE5CC, Gord - VE5UJ (who recently became a silent key in January), Arnold - VE5HV, Stan - VE5SC also a silent key, and many others had a vision of linking our province’s major cities and highways.

They accomplished this.

The maintenance and upkeep of such a system was tremendous. Thousands of miles and hours of work was put in to keep the system running.

Fortunately, in 1999 Dave Cameron - VE7LTD came to Saskatoon and Installed the seventh IRLP Node in the World.

This greatly decreased the amount of equipment needed to maintain a vast linked network.

Today, we have a hybrid system of linked repeaters and nodes called SASKWARN in partnership with the Parkland Amateur Radio Club, other clubs and individuals.

This early work by Eric - VE5HG (and others)

helped lay the foundation for the provincial and beyond systems as well as the 146.640 VE5SK Repeater.

Eric’s wife, Doris Quiring - VE5DJQ took over some of the net controlling on the 146.640 repeater as well on the SASKWARN System when Eric was no longer able to.

We appreciate both Eric’s and Doris’s contribution to the amateur community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

No contact.

Victor Echo Five Hotel Gulf silent key.

73 and god speed.

At this time we would like to have a one minute moment of silence in memory of Eric Quiring - VE5HG.

Wait 1 minute.

We would like to call upon any amateurs who would like to share a story of Eric and the impact it may have had on you.

With this in mind, we are blessed to have VoIP links from different parts of our great country and beyond connected for this memorial net.

There is an inherent delay in the interconnected systems and we ask you to key up for one second before speaking.  This allows all the repeaters and nodes to key up and have all of your transmission to be heard.

First off before we begin to open up the floor for others to speak I would like have this as orderly as possible and have people who would like to contribute check in to say their callsign phonetically.

We are going to alternate between the local 146.640 repeater and the VoIP links.

Let’s begin with local check-ins on the 146.640 repeater first.

Next we are going to go to VoIP.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this evening’s memorial net and encourage people to support their various repeaters and nodes with activity, financial support and goodwill.

73, this is VE5SD closing the net and opening it for regular traffic.

Thank You to the following Amateur Radio Operators for attending the “On the Air Memorial“ for Eric Quiring - VE5HG

VE5DJQ, VE5RS, VE5EA, VE5CRJ, VE5ARJ, VE5DOB, VE5DWR, VE5RJA, VE5RH, VE5LWW, VE5UO, VE5DTM, VE5RN, VE5AF, VE5GTW, VE5RJM, VE5KJS, VE5MEX, VE5EB, VE5HJU, VA5IW, VE5XL, VE5BWS, VE5KC, VE5EE, VE5QU, VE5QE, VE1JCS, VE5RO, VE5RY, VE5SD.

VE5MEX sent a poem to be read by Lyle - VE5EE.

The final frequency.

The mic is cold, the shack is still
No more the statics gentle thrill
You’ve logged your final, silent key
Across the great celestial sea

Your signal fades to the light and air
Yet in our hearts,we hold you there
Beyond the reach of wind or wire
Rest now, operator, you are higher
73
